Melbourne Walk

Contemporary Architecture with Heritage Facade

Melbourne Walk is a major mixed use development on Bourke Street Mall that brings together a new retail precinct and two upper level hotels operated by IHG, offering hundreds of rooms above a large retail podium. Designed by Buchan, the project combines contemporary architecture with restored heritage facades from buildings such as the former Allans Building, York Building and Public Benefit Bootery. The result is a precinct that blends new retail spaces, laneway style walkways and hotel amenities with the character of Melbourne’s historic streetscapes.

For this project that blends contemporary architecture with a restored heritage facade, Custom Clad supplied and installed aluminium cladding across both the heritage main facade and the atrium area for Hotel Indigo.

On the heritage facade, we supplied and installed 3mm aluminium cladding in copper and black ace finishes, as well as 3mm Mondoclad in natural brushed finish. All cladding was installed on our custom steel framing, which was designed and fabricated in-house.

At the atrium, we installed powdercoated aluminium in Concrete Grey finish to match the surrounding structure for ease of maintenance. We also installed louvres fitted with 3mm aluminium mesh panels with similar finish to complete the design.

At Custom Clad, we believe that heritage facades connect the present to the past. They are physical evidence of a community’s history, architecture and identity. Preserving them helps maintain a link to what came before, including building techniques, aesthetic styles, cultural values and the stories of past generations. Now open to the public, Melbourne Walk brings this history forward through thoughtful restoration and modern craftsmanship.
