402 Macaulay Road in Kensington is Assemble’s large build to rent community delivered by Hacer Group and designed by Hayball with KTA and SBLA. The development transforms an 8,395sqm former confectionery factory site into a new neighbourhood of 362 apartments across five mid rise buildings. The project brings together affordable housing, social housing, essential worker homes, market rate rentals and specialist disability housing.

Our team played a key role in the cladding package by supplying and installing a wide range of powdercoated aluminium hoods throughout the project. This included perforated aluminium hoods, aluminium heka hoods and breezeway hoods which were used to support the architectural rhythm of the facade.
These hoods add depth and shadow to the buildings while providing practical benefits such as shading, privacy and airflow. Each piece was custom made to suit the design requirements and installed with careful coordination on site.
Beyond the hoods, we carried out several important cladding elements across the project. This included installing 3mm solid aluminium cassette panels to the garage door and booster cupboard doors, providing a clean and durable finish that blends seamlessly with the wider facade. We also installed 4mm anodised aluminium soffit cladding in a light bronze finish which brings a warm, refined look to the undercroft areas.
This development arrives at a time when Australia is facing a serious shortage of secure and affordable homes. Kensington is a well connected area just outside Melbourne’s CBD and projects like this help relieve pressure by delivering a mix of housing options in locations where people want to live.
